62% of Riga residents support construction of Skanste tramline

A majority or 62% of economically active Riga residents support the construction of the Skanste tramline in Riga, according to a Kantar TNS survey.

The results of the survey show that 55% of Riga residents use to visit Skanste neighbourhood, most often Arena Riga and Elektrum Olympic Centre. Yet 58% of those who visit Skanste neighbourhood go there by their private cars. Asked about whether they would use the new tramline to reach Skanste, 32% of Riga residents give an affirmative answer, but 40% say they do not know it, because this would depend on the tram’s route.

"At present, almost 2 million visit Arena Riga and Elektrum Olympic Centre every year, and more than 10 thousand come to work in Skanste neighbourhood every morning. As Skanste neighbourhood can be hardly reached by public transport,  most people prefer to go there by their private cars, which is contrary to plans of reducing private transport flow in Riga. As the number of those living or working in Skanste neighbourhood will reach 40 thousand in the coming years, but the number of visitors in Arena Riga and Elektrum Olympic Centre will exceed 2 million per year, we have to think quickly how to diversify the means of transportation reaching Skanste. The new tramline is a good solution,” says Mārtiņš Vanags, Chairman of the Board in the Skanste Development Agency.
